First Nations Pathways
Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) is committed to achieving an inclusive workforce and developing employment opportunities for First Nations people. We recognise the diverse talent of our people will support our growth, performance and success. We strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Supporting First Nations careers is more than a business goal - it's part of our commitment to a fairer, more diverse future that reflects the communities we serve. We are committed to creating a workplace where First Nations people feel respected, supported and empowered
Becoming an FRV firefighter is more than a job - it's a career. We’re dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming workplace, supportive pathways, and opportunities to learn and grow.
Our dedicated Aboriginal Engagement Officer (AEO), who is a career firefighter, can assist you with each stage of the firefighter recruitment process by conducting in-depth information sessions, sharing his experience and answering questions you may have.
"Becoming a firefighter has been an incredibly uplifting experience, both professionally and personally.
One of the most rewarding parts of the job has been the instant friendships that I have formed from the recruit course through to station life. These friendships, and that fact we get to work together to genuinely make a difference have become a big part of why I enjoy coming to work every day.
Being a proud aboriginal man, I also had a very early sense of connection and representation from within FRV with the brothers (AEO) reaching out straight away and helping me with anything I needed.
Looking ahead, I feel confident in the path forward. With so many opportunities to grow and develop, I know I have a strong future being a firefighter." - Level 2 Firefighter Jackson McCauley-Davis Wadi Wadi/Barapa Barapa man
The AEO can help you by:
- Providing advice on each stage of the recruitment process as well as tailored information sessions.
- Assisting with preparation for the Written Selection Test.

What can Fire Rescue Victoria offer in return?

We are passionate about empowering First Nations peoples through mentorship, cultural support and career development.
"Working for Fire Rescue Victoria as an Indigenous man has been a big part of my growth — not just in the job, but as a person. It’s helped me build confidence, stay connected to who I am, and show others that you can be proud of your culture while making a real difference in the community. " - Leading Firefighter Craig Chivers Dharawal man
"I’ve proudly served as a firefighter for 33 years, starting as a recruit and working my way up to Senior Station Officer. With the right training, support and personal motivation I have found that anything is possible at FRV. As one of the few First Nations firefighters in FRV I have seen how important it is to support each other. As a firefighter I have had incredible opportunities for growth, leadership and life balance and I would love to see more mob take up the challenge and join FRV." - Senior Station Officer Roy Griffiths Pairrebeenne/Trawlwoolway man
